The children have started the term well, busying themselves with lots of learning! Here is an outline of what Year 1 will be learning during the Spring Term.
Literacy
English
Year 1 will have two key texts this term: Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers and Bob, Man on the Moon by Simone Bartram. They will write stories, explore descriptive list poems as well as write instructions. In addition to this, the children will use their inquiring minds to ask questions and find answers about animals and the moon.
Reading
Children will be given sound mats and word mats to practise reading. We will also send home reading books that are changed on a Monday and Thursday. Daily reading is encouraged as it will greatly help your child’s learning in other curriculum areas. Please try to sign your child’s reading log at least twice a week.

TOPIC (History/Geography)
Toys will be the focus in history. The children will learn about the popular toys through the 20th century and the early 21st century. They will
think about their favourite toy from today before moving on to look at toys which were popular when their parents and grandparents
were children. Throughout the unit, the children will develop a range of historical skills such as – asking and answering questions,
identifying and interpreting different sources and recognising change, exploring how this influences them today. A range of learning
activities will be used which include: drawing, discussions, role play and games as well as writing tasks.
Science – ‘Animals including Humans’
Children will learn about human and animal bodies and consider similarities and differences between them. Children will engage in a variety of activities including drawing and labelling the body, using their senses to conduct an investigation, describing animal bodies as well as sorting animals into groups.
Religious Education
Our focus this term is Friendship. The children will learn about what it means to be a good friend and think about who their friends are and the qualities they have which make them good friends. Children will consider how they can be a good friend to others and think about what happens when friends disagree and argue, with a focus on resolving conflict. Children then go on to explore stories of friendship from the Bible and reflect on how the characters in the stories show their friendship.
We will also continue to dedicate some time to deepen our understanding of our school values.
PE
This term the children will be focusing on HRE – Health Related Exercise followed by gymnastics and dance. PE will continue on Wednesday mornings. Please ensure your child is wearing the navy blue St. Michael’s tracksuit and it is clearly labelled with their name. Alternatively, if your child does not have a school tracksuit, please ensure they are in their house colour t-shirt and jogging bottoms along with their uniform to change into after.
Music
In music we will continue to follow our Charanga curriculum. The children will focus on the question How does music make the world a better place? They will also learn to sing a variety of songs.
Modern Foreign Languages
In Key Stage 1, we are fortunate to have a teacher from the Italian consulate, who introduces the children to a language other than English through songs, games and rhymes.
HRE (Health & Relationship Education)
In HRE, the children will be looking at two themes: Dreams and Goals and Healthy Me, which looks at ways to stay healthy in mind and body.
Computing
Learners will develop their understanding of technology and how it can help them in their everyday lives. They will start to become familiar with the different components of a computer by developing their keyboard and mouse skills.
