After an inspiring and exciting end of term, we are ready for our new learning. We are extremely excited to learn about our new history topic – The Romans, and about all the learning opportunities to come.
Y4 are rearing to go!
Here is an outline of what Year 4 will be learning during the Spring Term.
english
This term we will be exploring story themes through ‘retelling’ and role play, looking at text structure, characters and use of descriptive language. We will be learning to retell parts of the story ‘Escape from Pompeii’ and learning to create our own stories.
We will also be developing our comprehension skills by reading ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ by Michael Morpurgo.
maths
In addition to embedding the children’s mental maths skills, through our daily CLIC programme and BMBT (Big Maths Beat That), we are following the White Rose Maths curriculum, which covers the whole content of the National Curriculum. This term the focus will be:
- Fractions
- Decimals
- Length – area and perimeter
- Mass and capacitiy
Also this term, the children must continue to learn their remaining x6, x7 and x9 times table facts so that they know them off by heart. They should also revise their x3, x4 and x8 tables, from the previous year. We will be having fun with speed tests and games and challenging ourselves to learn the division facts too!
SCIENCE: ‘states of matter’
Our science unit for this term is focusses on changing states. We will be learning about the water cycle, how different materials are grouped and how one material can exist in different states e.g. water can exist in a solid, liquid or gas state.
TOPIC (HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY)
In History, we are learning about the Romans as part of our focus on teaching British history that has had a real impact on modern Britain.
We will be developing our understanding of the Roman Empire and life under Roman rule, including the impact of Roman rule on the towns roads, people and trade in Britain today.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
In RE we learn about the 6 main religions in the world, and this term our focus is on Judaism. As part of our topic, our learning will include:
- Festivals
- Kashrut Laws – kosher food
- Shabbat
- Moses
- Celebrating Passover (Seder meal)
- Jewish pilgrimage
As part of our understanding of Christianity we will also be exploring forgiveness and its relationship with ‘The Easter story’.
Each week, time will be dedicated to deepening our understanding of our school values of ‘respect’ & ‘love’ and in the second half term ‘perseverance‘. We will try to live these in our daily lives.
PE
This term the children will be focusing on Gymnastics, dance and cricket. We are delighted to have a cricket coach in school each week in the second half of this term.
Please ensure that your child comes to school in their PE kit, school tracksuit and trainers on Mondays.
Please help us ensure that your children are fully prepared each week!
MFL (Modern Foreign Language)
The children will continue to learn Spanish, developing their skills in speaking and listening.
Computing
Computing this term will focus on the internet and audio editing. We will continually have a focus on e-safety weaved into the lessons.
HRE (Health and Relationship Education)
In HRE, the children will be looking at two themes: Dreams and Goals and Healthy Me which looks at ways to stay healthy in mind and body.
Music
In music, the children will be developing pulse and groove through improvisation and creating simple melodies as a class. They will also continue with djembe drumming lessons.
HOME LEARNING
Children are excited to receive extra class DOJOS and stickers for completing their home learning well and for bringing their homework to school on time.
Home learning will include:
- Reading – please encourage your child to delve into a good book and to read a little each day. Each child has a home reading log to complete. Please sign this each week.
- Mathletics (login and password card will remain the same)
- Learn Its – Please help your child to reularly practise their times tables up to 12 x 12.
- Weekly spelling words to learn (children will be tested on a Friday)
- The children will also be given a fortnightly comprehension (written) task on a Monday, which must be completed and handed in on a Friday. The specific return date will be written on their comprehension sheet. We will mark them together in class so it is important that it is completed on time.
