Year 4 have had great fun this Autumn term investigating electricity and sound. They learnt how to connect a circuit and enjoyed making motors and buzzers work using home-made switches to turn their devices on and off.
They have also learnt about how our ears hear sound and they understand that vibrations are necessary for sound to be heard. We had a very noisy time exploring sound by hitting, striking and tapping objects and instruments and talking through balloons, as we identified the source of the vibrations.
The Science National Curriculum states that children should be taught to:
- construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers
- recognise that a switch opens and closes a circuit and associate this with whether or not a lamp lights in a simple series circuit
The Science National Curriculum states that children should be taught to:
- identify how sounds are made, associating some of them with something vibrating
- recognise that vibrations from sounds travel through a medium to the ear
