In our Health and Relationships sessions this term, Y6 have been focussing on their dreams and goals for the future. It has been lovely hearing about the goals, dreams and aspirations children already have, which include becoming artists and owning their own art studios, professional musicians, dancers, actors, singers, bloggers, influencers and football players.
To start with, in talking partners, the children thought of a realistic goal/dream they had for themselves and then shared their ideas in the circle using ‘Jade’ the HRE mascot. The children then discussed why it is important to have goals and stretch themselves to reach them.

Back at their tables, each child was given two ‘goal cards’ and asked to think of two goals for themselves; a school based goal and the other goal could be an aspiration for outside school. Here are some of their examples:

Following on from the above discussions, the children used a totem pole goal setting template and responded to some key questions such as:
- What skills will you use to help you achieve your goal?
- What steps will you need to take to reach your goal?
- How can you break the goal down into manageable steps?
- What learning skills do you need to use to help you achieve your goal?
The wings of the totem pole were used to indicate strengths or skills the children would need to motivate them.

What are your dreams and goals?
What steps are you going to take to achieve them?
How will you know you have achieved your goal?
