Reception have been supporting participation of the Big Garden, and Big Schools’ Birdwatch 2025! It is the world’s largest garden wildlife survey and every year hundreds of thousands of nature lovers take part which is helping to build a picture of how garden birds are faring.
The children have been learning new vocabulary and exploring the natural world around them by engaging in activities to develop and support their curiosity and understanding.
We were very lucky to have had the opportunity to explore a REAL nest. It wasn’t only the children who were fascinated – it was the first time the teachers had seen a nest this close up, so it was an exciting experience for all!
Bird Feeders
The children made their own bird feeders using pinecones, lard, porridge oats and mixed dried fruits!
We poured… we mixed…. we mashed…. we stirred!!
Then it was time to get messy and add the bird food mix to the pinecones!…
We then hung them outside, ready for the birds to have their special treat!…
The children have now taken their bird feeders home and we would love it if you could hang it in a garden or a place that the birds would be able to access them.
