This week, Year 4 had an exciting and enriching Asia Day! It was filled with creative, cultural, and interactive activities. Here’s a look at what we got up to:
We started the day by putting the final touches to our beautiful watercolour art projects. Throughout the term, the children have been working on creating birds in the style of Asian art. For this project, we painted Japanese warbling white-eyes perched on delicate cherry blossoms. The results were stunning – the children are so proud of their work!
Next, we explored languages by learning how to say, “Hello, my name is…” in Chinese. The children had fun practicing their pronunciation and discovering a little about the tones used in the language.
In the morning, we watched an exciting game of Sepak Takraw, a traditional Southeast Asian sport, with a match between the Philippines and Malaysia. The children were amazed at the players’ incredible skills and flexibility as they played this fascinating game using only their feet, head, knees, and chest to hit the ball.
In the afternoon, Year 4 teamed up with Year 1 to share their China information booklets. These booklets have been a term-long project, and it was wonderful to see the Year 4 students proudly presenting their research and sharing their knowledge with the younger children. Year 1 loved hearing all about China; it was a lovely opportunity for the two year groups to connect.
To round off the day, we rotated through a series of hands-on activities. These included:
- Origami: Learning how to fold paper into beautiful shapes, including cranes and lotus flowers.
- Lantern Making: Crafting bright and colorful paper lanterns.
- Chopstick Challenges: Practicing the art of using chopsticks through fun and engaging games.
- Sushi Making: Rolling our own sushi, complete with a variety of fillings.
Finally, we ended the day with an Asian feast and ate our way around the continent! After checking all the allergies, the children sampled delicious Chinese dumplings, homemade Japanese sushi, Indian samosas, poppadoms and onion bhajis . It was a wonderful way to celebrate the diverse and rich cultures of Asia.
Asia Day was a fantastic experience, and the children thoroughly enjoyed every part of it. We hope they came home buzzing with stories to share!
