In early November, Year Five took a trip to Southwark Cathedral to learn more about our Cathedral as well as take part in a candle making workshop. We were very lucky to begin our visit with a sighting of the elusive cathedral cat, Hodge, after which we enjoyed a tour of the building, focusing on the distinctive Christian imagery.
We had the chance to experience what a Baptism in the cathedral looks like, as well as learning more about the cathedral as the seat of the Bishop of Southwark. This allowed some of us the chance to don the robes of Bishops and even sit in their special seats.
After that, we had a chance to sit in the chancels like the choir do during service.
Our tour also took in multiple alters, stained glass windows, special imagery and even part of a Roman road!
Following a break for lunch and a run around outside, we started our workshop. We learned to delicately roll our wick in a sheet of beeswax to create candles, before using clay to create a holder to the candle, that we have since decorated back at school.
Overall, it was an extremely interesting and educational morning, followed by a creative afternoon, from which we have some beautiful mementoes!
