How is your Italian?

The children of St Michael’s would say, ‘improving’.

We have been fortunate to have Italian lessons taught by Ms Delise from the Italian Consulate since last year and continuing this academic year. This year, the children from Year 1 to Year 6 have an opportunity to learn with Ms Delise, as well the access to a vibrant lunch time Italian club.

At Key Stage 2, modern foreign languages are taught to develop key linguistic skills. They also support children’s social development as they learn about other countries and cultures.
Pupils will be taught to:

  • Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words
  • Engage in conversations, ask and answer questions, express opinions and respond to those of others, and seek clarification and help
  • Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary and basic language/grammar structures
  • Develop accurate pronunciation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words
  • Present ideas and information orally to a range of audiences
  • Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  • Appreciate stories, songs, poems and rhymes in the chosen language
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words, including through use of a dictionary
  • Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentences.
  • Describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing
  • Understand basic grammar appropriate to the language being studied, including feminine and masculine forms

We are very early in the term, but wanted to share a part of the children’s modern foreign language learning.

Over the term and across the school, the children will be learning:

  • Greeting and introducing yourself
  • Parts of the day and the related greeting
  • Colours
  • Numbers up to 10 and 100
  • Seasons
  • School objects and types of furniture
  • Food
  • Christmas in Italy
  • The alphabet
  • School subjects
  • Months of the year
  • How to ask and say your age

We are sure the children will be wowing you with their Italian as they grow and develop skills in this language.

Avanti con l’apprendimento!
