Observational Art

In Year 5 this half term, we will be looking at painting, in particular still life or observational painting. We have chosen an artist to focus on with a link to our topic, Africa. Enfant Précoce, is a young artist from Cameroon who creates paintings in a distinct style, drawing on influences such as colour, fashion and traditional Cameroonian art. His work is often described as having a element of cubism or likened to other artists such as Basquiat.

To prepare for our paintings, we have started to practise observational drawing of items around the classroom or a more traditional bowl of fruit. We have thought about perspective, size, shape and texture while drawing our observations.

We will move on to playing with colour and begin to explore using paint to recreate our observations, eventually moving on to our interpretations on Enfant Précoce’s work. Watch this space to see how our still life paintings turn out!
