This term Y4 have enjoyed exploring buildings; their shapes and purposes and their depictions by different artists such as Monet and LS Lowry. We looked at factories, houses, office buildings, government buildings and skyscrapers. We focused initially on Monet’s paintings of the Houses of Parliament. Monet painted the Houses of Parliament at different times of the day and during different seasons. We picked two of these to reproduce. We had fun blending pastels to create different sunsets and an impression of the Houses of Parliament.
After spending some time sketching a range of buildings, under timed conditions, children used thier ideas to draw their own cityscape. They thought carefully about the shapes, angles and the relative heights of buildings to each other and practised layering some buildings in front of others. These drawings were used with black ink to create monoprints which involved placing their sketch on an inked piece of laminate and tracing over each part of it. A different coloured ink was then used and the process above was repeated to produce highlighted areas of their cityscape print.
Here are some of the amazing monoprints Y4 produced.
