The children in Year 6 have been working hard to master some new calculation methods. During this half term, they were introduced to the method for long division. The National Curriculum states that children should be taught to:
‘Divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division and interpret remainders as whole numbers and fractions.’
The children worked in pairs and used Rally Coaching (a Kagan strategy) to support each other when practising this method.
‘Long division really didn’t make sense to me at first, but practising with my partner helped me a lot.’
‘You have to get the multiples right at the beginning. If you don’t, the whole sum will be wrong.’
‘I get it now!’
‘I can see why they call it LONG division! You get quicker at the steps when you get used to it though.’
‘I think I helped my partner understand it a bit better.’
