At St Michael’s we continue to strive to be the best that we can be. We are looking forward to continuing our learning with enthusiasm this term.
Here is an outline of what Year 4 will be learning during the Summer Term.
ENGLISH
This term we will be exploring story and looking at the text structure, characters and the use of descriptive language and dialogue in a ‘warning tale’. We will be learning to retell parts of the story ‘The Canal’ and learning to create our own warning tales. In addition our focus on Explanation text will aim to explain why some animals are extinct or endangered.
We will also be developing our comprehension skills by reading ‘The Girl of Ink and Stars’ by Kiran Millwood Hargrave. This imagined island fantasy sets the daughter of a cartographer off on an enchanting quest to find her runaway best friend, with only her knowledge of ancient myths and her father’s map to guide her.
MATHS
In addition to embedding the children’s mental maths skills, through our daily CLIC programme and BMBT (Big Maths Beat That), we are following the White Rose Maths curriculum, which covers the whole content of the National Curriculum. This term the focus will be:
- Decimals
- Measurement – involving time and money
- Statistics – data handling
- Geometry – properties of shapes and position and direction
Also this term, this is the FINAL PUSH for learning ALL our TIMES TABLES off by heart. We will be focussing on our x12 times tables as well as revising x6, x7 and x9 times table facts so that they are perfect. Children should also revise their x3, x4 and x8 tables, from the previous year. We will continue to have fun with speed tests and games and challenging ourselves to learn the division facts too!
The Year 4 Multiplication Times Table Check (MTC) is in June! Y4 will be ready!
SCIENCE: ‘Animals including humans’ and ‘living things and their habitats‘
We will be learning about our digestive system and the types of function of teeth in animals. We will also be exploring food chains and different animal habitats as well as gaining an understanding of the classification and grouping of living things.
TOPIC (HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY)
In Geoography we are learning about North America as part of our whole school theme of Wisdom and Wonder.
We will be developing our understanding of climate, weather and location of places in this region of the world, as well as comparing places and discovering their wonders.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
In RE we learn about the 6 main religions in the world, and this term our focus is on Christianity and in particular the Bible – is the Bible a book or a library? Why is the Bible special? As part of this topic, our learning will include:
- Who wrote the Bible?
- The books of the Bible
- Stories songs and Psalms
- How do Christians use the Bible?
- What is sacred?
- What is sacred to you?
Each week, time will be dedicated to deepening our understanding of our school values of ‘Respect’ & ‘Trust’ and in the second half term ‘Perseverance‘. We will try to live these in our daily lives.
PE
This term the children will be focusing on invasion games, Athletics and multi-skills.
Please ensure that your child comes to school in their PE kit, school tracksuit and trainers on Mondays.
Please help us ensure that your children are fully prepared each week!
MFL (Modern Foreign Language)
The children will continue to learn Spanish, developing their skills in speaking and listening.
Computing
Computing this term will focus on editing and programming. We will continually have a focus on e-safety weaved into the lessons.
HRE (Health and Relationship Education)
In HRE, the children will be looking at : Relationships and ways to stay healthy in mind and body.
Music
In music, the children will be developing pulse and groove through improvisation and creating simple melodies as a class. They will also continue with djembe drumming lessons.
HOME LEARNING
Children are excited to receive extra class DOJOS and stickers for completing their home learning well and for bringing their homework to school on time.
Home learning will include:
- Reading – please encourage your child to delve into a good book and to read a little each day. Each child has a home reading log to complete. Please sign this each week.
- Mathletics (login and password card will remain the same)
- Learn Its – Please help your child to regularly practise their times tables up to 12 x 12, at speed! Use a stop watch to time thier progress.
- Weekly spelling words to learn (children will be tested on a Friday)
- The children will also be given a fortnightly comprehension (written) task on a Monday, which must be completed and handed in on a Friday. The specific return date will be written on their comprehension sheet. We will mark them together in class so it is important that it is completed on time.
