English
Year 1 will have two key texts this term: George and the dragon by Christopher Wormell and The kiss that missed by David Melling. They will explore non-fiction texts, create fact files, write newspaper reports as well learn the stories the Pie Corbett way!
Reading
Children will be given sound mats and word mats to practise reading. They will develop their comprehension skills during carpet time.We will also send home reading books that are changed on a Monday and Thursday. Daily reading is encouraged as it will greatly help your child’s learning in other curriculum areas. Please try to sign your child’s reading log at least twice a week.
Maths
The daily CLIC programme continues in class, the children have become familiar with the layout of the weekly Big Maths Beat That Tests and Learn its.
This term the focus will be:
- Multiplication and division including multiples of 2,5 and 10
- Fractions
- Geometry -position and direction
- Place value within 100
- Money
- Time

TOPIC (History/Geography)
Kings and Queens will be the focus in history. The children will learn about what a monarch is, the role they play as well as about significant monarchs.
Science – Plants
Children will learn about the structure of plants and trees and what they need to grow. They will take part in activities such as identifying common plants in the garden and in the wild sorting pictures and making a collage.
Children will plant their own bean and observe the process!
Religious Education
The class will learn about what a ritual is and how different religions have different rituals. They will find out about places of worship.
PE
PE will continue on Wednesday mornings with Mr Bailey Wilson. Please ensure your child is wearing the navy blue St. Michael’s tracksuit and it is clearly labelled with their name. Alternatively, if your child does not have a school tracksuit, please ensure they are in their house colour t-shirt and jogging bottoms along with their uniform to change into after.
They will be focussing on striking and fielding and then athletics so they are ready for Sports Day!
Music
In music we will continue to follow our Charanga curriculum. The children will focus on the question What Songs Can We Sing to Help Us through the Day? They will also continue to learn the recorder so please ensure your child has their recorder in school on Tuesdays.
Modern Foreign Languages
In Key Stage 1, we are fortunate to have a teacher from the Italian consulate, who introduces the children to a language other than English through songs, games and rhymes.
HRE (Health & Relationship Education)
In HRE, the children will be looking at two themes: Relationships and Changing Me in preparation for their transition.
Computing
Y1 will develop their understanding of the various aspects of using a computer to create and manipulate text. They will become more familiar with using a keyboard and mouse to enter and remove text. They will also consider how to change the look of their text and will be able to justify their reasoning in making these changes.
